6 Post-Workout Hygiene Mistakes You're Making

6 Post-Workout Hygiene Mistakes You're Making

Working out is all about improving your health. But if you aren't careful about your hygiene, you might get stuck with a cold — or worse. If you're the kind of person who has made working out a major part of your weekly routine, then that's amazing, and your body certainly thanks you! But keep in mind that you are that much more susceptible to nasty germs when you're constantly working out, and you need to make sure you take care of yourself. Nothing is more annoying than getting into a regular workout routine, then having to stop for a few weeks because of a bad cold.

A few things you can do before even hitting the gym? Get a good night's sleep, maintain a healthy diet, take a multivitamin, and wash your hands frequently. The key to avoiding a cold is by making sure your immune system is prepared! That way, the germs hardly stand a chance. Here are a few things you should not be doing if you want to avoid illnesses and infections of all kinds. Remember: Be smart, be safe, and wash your hands a lot.

5 Daily Habits That Can Speed Up Your Metabolism According To Someone In The Know

5 Daily Habits That Can Speed Up Your Metabolism According To Someone In The Know

There are loads of reasons to love your body, even if you're stuck trying to figure out how to speed up your metabolism. For starters, it helps you get from point A to point B (which rocks, when point A is a pizza joint and point B is your couch). Plus, boosting your metabolism can increase your sexual charisma, which is never a bad thing, really.

But perhaps the best thing to love about your body and your metabolism? It constantly does you a solid by burning calories all on its own. How? Well, first of all, it's important to mention that having a naturally slow metabolism isn't inherently dangerous to your health, so you shouldn't sweat it, as long as you feel your best. If you're feeling low in energy, however, a slowed down metabolism could be to blame, according to Forbes.

Although there are genetic factors that can play into your metabolic rate, according to the New York Times, there are everyday behaviors that impact it, too. Could you be slowing your metabolism and you don't even know it? I caught up with Keri Gans, RD and author of The Small Change Diet, for her advice when it comes to habits that can speed up your metabolism.

10 Great Strapless Bra Hacks if You Have Big Boobs

10 Great Strapless Bra Hacks if You Have Big Boobs

My boobs grew in somewhere around third grade, and they kept coming in all the way through high school. I’m no stranger when it comes to needing bra hacks for big boobs, and when you’re going strapless, it’s ridiculously hard to find strapless bras for big boobs. Slipping, sliding, and digging are issues for everyone with the wrong bra and the wrong fit, but that goes double for girls seeking out bras for larger breasts.

That being said, it does not mean that you can’t wear that sleeveless dress or that backless shirt. You’ve got strapless bra options for bigger chests. Finding the right strapless bra for a bigger chest is partially about preference, but it’s also about build. A good rule of thumb is that thicker straps tend to provide more support, so the strapless bras that are holding themselves together with the fabric equivalent of dental floss just aren’t going to cut it.

Another rule is that, because all the support is targeted in one place, the torso strap tends to be tighter, so the softer and more comfortable the fabric, the better off you’ll be. Here are some of the best strapless bras, as well as strapless bra hacks, for bigger chested women, so you can take the pressure off your shoulders and off your mind.

8 Common and Surprising Hygiene Mistakes Everyone Makes

8 Common and Surprising Hygiene Mistakes Everyone Makes

The FDA is incredibly strict about food ingredients, and yet there's still very little regulation on the ingredients in personal care products. The Environmental Working Group estimates that women use an average of 12 cosmetic products a day, which means some of the most common hygiene mistakes happen just from having a daily beauty routine.

When I first started reading about this stuff, I figured, “So what? It’s on my skin. I’m not eating it.” It turns out — quite terrifyingly, actually — that everything you put on your body gets absorbed right into your blood stream. Your skin’s even more porous when you shower or wash yourself, as the heat and the moisture cause your pores to open right up. I don’t know if your parents ever put soap in your mouth when you said a bad word as a kid, but there’s no reason to continue that practice into adulthood. A general rule of thumb: If you wouldn’t put it in your mouth, don’t put it on your body.

Yes, it’s exhausting to keep track, and no, I haven’t started lathering myself with avocados and crushed cranberries. But I am that annoying person in the drug store reading every single ingredient on the label of the shampoo bottle. It’s really, really important to know what you’re putting on your body, but thankfully, you’re not alone. Here’s a list of some of the most common hygiene mistakes people are making (filled with the worst ingredients for you) and how to fix them.

10 In-Shower Hacks That'll Keep You Feeling Fresher For Longer

10 In-Shower Hacks That'll Keep You Feeling Fresher For Longer

As a fan of both natural health and personal hygiene, it was a little disheartening to find out that daily showers aren’t great for you. I thus found myself asking, “Are there things I can do in the shower to feel fresher between washes?" The answer, it turns out, is a resounding yes. It might seem counterintuitive, but by switching up your routine a little, you can actually train your body to do what it does best — rejuvenate and clean itself — without that daily shower.

The same way cats are equipped with natural hygienic mechanisms (like a barbed tongue and detergent-like saliva), our bodies have delicate systems in place to take care of germs and bacteria. Unfortunately, most harsh soap-based products stifle or wipe out those systems, so bad bacteria and odors come back stronger, and hygiene becomes an uphill battle.

No, I’m not suggesting that you stop washing yourself (nor should you start doing it with your tongue). But there are smarter alternatives that support your body’s self-cleaning functions, and the general consensus seems to be that natural is better. I’ve compiled a list of my favorites here, so if you decide to take a few days' hiatus in between your showers, you can do so with confidence, poise, and happy smells.

10 Best Shower Routine Steps for People Who Want to Feel Squeaky Clean

10 Best Shower Routine Steps for People Who Want to Feel Squeaky Clean

Sometimes a quick rinse-off will cut it. Other times, like when you get home from a three-day camping trip or you’ve just spent a swampy August night barhopping in Manhattan, you want a shower routine that makes you feel extra clean. Maybe you’re just one of those people who loves to feel clean and fresh all day long, every day. I get it. I’m that person, too. That being said, while you might feel extra sanitized with a scalding hot shower and a soap that leaves your skin squeaking, you’re probably not doing your body any favors.

First of all, your body already has natural functions in place to keep you feeling clean, like healthy bacteria that fight infections and keep things balanced. Secondly, hot water and harsh chemicals in your shower products can totally throw off your body’s oil production and cleansing functions, which actually leave you feeling less clean in a matter of hours. The best option? Find natural solutions with natural ingredients that help to balance and nourish skin and hair, instead of stripping it. That way, you’ll feel clean right out of the shower, clean two hours later, and clean at the end of the day.

how to make sure you're getting the best workout before, during, and after exercise #fitness

how to make sure you're getting the best workout before, during, and after exercise #fitness

The universal truth is that we all want to get the most out of our workouts. If we've made the effort to drag ourselves to a gym/yoga studio/spin class and managed to survive, you can bet that we want to make sure we've done everything we can, and that we want to avoid pre and post-workout mistakes to get the best results. We all know how important it is to eat before exercising, wear the appropriate clothing and hydrate to the point of excess, but it turns out there are certain post-workout behaviors that are important, too.

After an intense gym session, all you probably want to do (at least, all I ever want to do) is leave immediately, grab a chipotle burrito and melt into your couch for the remainder of the evening with a bottle of wine and your Netflix queue. Unfortunately, there are a few things you need to get done so that your workout was worth all of the effort you put into it before that dream can become a reality.

Here are some post workout mistakes we're all guilty of making, probably without realizing it (including me, who happens to be writing this wearing the same outfit I wore to a bootcamp class at 6 a.m.) and how to fix them.

5 foods that will improve your workout

5 foods that will improve your workout

Good news, fellow coffee snobs: As it turns out, our beloved beverage is actually a great pre-workout drink (who knew?). According to ABC News, there are several reasons drinking our drug of choice is a great idea before exercising. This coffee news got me thinking: If drinking something like coffee before launching into downward dog is a good idea, what else have I been missing? As it turns out, there are several easy, under-the-radar workout fuels you probably haven't tried yet. Before your next trip to the gym, here are a few to try:

1. Drink coffee
Let’s start off with coffee, shall we? ABC News explains that, not only does the beverage improve circulation (gets oxygen into your precious, precious blood), but it also reduces pain, enhances memory, and fuels and preserves muscle. In other words, it's a win/win/win/win/win situation.

2. Try raw cacao
If you haven’t added cacao powder to your smoothies yet, I highly recommend trying it — it will trick your brain into thinking you're drinking a chocolate shake. It's also pretty great for your body, and an easy way to get some pre-workout energy, that thing we're all lacking right before going to the gym. According to fitness blog GabbyandLaird.com, the flavanols in raw cacao can help produce energy in your muscles. The ingredient is also rich in vitamins and antioxidants, according to HuffPost, and it can improve your mood.

11 things dermatologists would never do to their faces

11 things dermatologists would never do to their faces

I don't know about you, but I've always wondered what dermatologists do to their skin to make it so beautiful. While I recognize that they are human and likely get breakouts just like the rest of us, all of the doctors I've come in contact with have had the best skin ever.

And how could they not? It is their profession, after all. They know what's up, they've studied skin care for years, and have access to all sorts of products and treatments. (So lucky, right?) But I've always thought it has to be something more. Perhaps, something that they aren't doing to their skin?

That really seems to be the bigger question. Because most of us know about skin care basics — wash your face, use sunscreen, drink lots of water, etc. These tips are all pretty well-known. So it's gotta be the things derms avoid that really make the difference.

To find out, I contacted Dr. Kally Papantoniou, a New York City board-certified dermatologist, to ask what she wouldn't dare do to her face. Turns out, there are several bad habits she purposefully avoids, as well as some less-than-desirable scenarios she consistently shies away from. Below are some of her tips, as well as others from more doctors in the field. Check them out, and get ready to adjust your daily routines as necessary.

10 hygiene rules you might be forgetting

10 hygiene rules you might be forgetting

When it comes to personal hygiene, I think we can all agree that it's one area in our lives where skimping on time or effort probably isn't the best move. That's why it can be so helpful to get reminders about hygiene that we might sometimes overlook or may have pushed to the backs of our minds. And when I cam across an AskReddit thread about simple hygiene rules many people for get about, I knew I'd find a goldmine of helpful, diverse information.

Unfortunately there's a lot of misinformation out there about our health, especially when it comes to women's bodies. Often in the media, people talk about women's appearances as being synonymous with health or hygiene, when that isn't necessarily the case — and even if it were, it's not anyone else's place to comment on it anyway. One common instance of this is when we talk about how women maintain their body hair, such as whether or not they remove it from certain areas — and what's more, we sometimes conflate this with how "clean" or "hygienic" their decision is. In reality, of course, the removal of body hair or choosing to wear makeup or any other number of appearance-based decisions have nothing to do with our actual health or hygiene —and again, either way, we don't get to make those decisions for anyone other than ourselves anyway.

Even outside of women's bodies, our culture is quick to label talk about our anatomies or bodily functions as "too private" or "too gross," thus brushing things under the rug. This can be dangerous, not only because it leads to people being misinformed about their bodies and health, but because it contributes to unnecessary taboos and stigmas as well.

9 Weird Things You're Not Doing in the Shower (But Should Be)

9 Weird Things You're Not Doing in the Shower (But Should Be)

When I was a camp counselor in Maine for a summer, everyone’s shower routine went something like this: Turn on water, rotate body 360 degrees, turn off water. In an actual society, however, that won’t quite cut it. There are weird things you’re not doing in the shower, but probably should be. Yep. Turns out you very well might have been showering wrong your entire life, because loads of us have been missing essential steps in our shower routines that keep skin looking healthy and beautiful.

As a result, I got in touch with two dermatologists to ask them their take on the matter — because no one knows great expert-approved skin care habits quite like the professionals. Dr. Sonoa Au, MD (a cosmetic and medical dermatologist in New Jersey and Brooklyn) as well as Dr. Derek V. Chan, MD, PhD (a cosmetic and medical dermatologist in Manhattan, Staten Island, and Westchester) were more than willing to answer my questions and shed some light on the issue of proper skin care in the shower. If you’re afraid you’re missing a few weird things you should be doing in the shower, and are looking to revamp your hygiene routine, check out these dermatologists’ best advice.

10 Common Bra Fitting Mistakes You Really Want to Avoid, If You Want the Girls to Look on Point

10 Common Bra Fitting Mistakes You Really Want to Avoid, If You Want the Girls to Look on Point

It’s an unfortunate truth, but a truth nonetheless: tons of women are making huge mistakes while fitting their bras. That means that they’re wandering aimlessly through the potential hell that can be the lingerie racks, picking the wrong bra sizes and styles every time. According to a recent survey from Rigby & Peller, the majority of American women are wearing the same one or two bras every single day, which, to me, shows that women have trouble finding comfortable options that we actually like, so we’re only sticking with what we know.

Now, I could be in the minority here, but somehow, I doubt it; it’s time to get all this bra-fitting business straight once and for all. I was lucky enough to speak with Kim "Kimmay" Caldwell, bra fitter and lingerie expert of Hurray Kimmay. She’s fit thousands of women over the past few years, helping them to find their ideal size and style. “A bra that fits well should feel supportive, comfortable, and often like a nice hug,” Caldwell says. “If it's poking, digging, roaming around all day, or feels awful — chances are it does not fit well.” If you’re part of the latter category, check out these top mistakes women make while choosing their bras.
